Microsoft will offer a set of online services that should support companies of all sizes. A new licensing model that offers services on a per-user subscription basis is provided. Current customers with Software Assurance can purchase these per-user subscriptions at a discount.
There are four online services available either separately or as a suite:
- SharePoint Online
- Exchange Online
- Office Communications Online
- Office Live Meeting
Looks like it’s going to be another big year for SharePoint and the analysts are already predicting it’s continued wide-spread use (viral or otherwise). To find out more about Microsoft’s online services, take tour of their website.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 is one of the fastest growing products in the company’s history and seems to have as many uses as a Swiss Army knife.
A Forrester survey, which was self-funded and involved 259 IT pros, shows that 24% are implementing or upgrading to MOSS 2007 now while another 41% plan to do so in the next six months. Another 12% of users plan to roll MOSS 2007 out in the next 12 months.
ECM was the primary reason for 22% of respondents in rolling out MOSS 2007, the survey showed. Next was improved employee communication (17%), ability to improve business intelligence usage (16%), improve business performance management (15%), improve online collaboration with external parties (9%), and provide employees with unified communications (9%).

Why should CIOs pay close attention to this particular Microsoft product?
Because it's viral (meaning its use is probably growing in your company, whether you know it or not), and it needs to be managed closely to get the most of out it.
As a barometer of the momentum of SharePoint, Microsoft's content/document/image/records management system, the SharePoint 2007 conference, held in Seattle March 3-7, was a complete sell-out, with a wait list of over 500 people. In fact, some desperate SharePoint people even showed up without conference passes, hoping to scalp a ticket to get into the event. And if you believe SharePoint is simply a departmental solution, think again. Many of the companies in attendance were global, and their use of the product expansive. If you're not paying attention to this phenomenon, you are doing your organization a disservice.
Organizations generally rely on SharePoint to serve as a centralized repository for a variety of files, and it does a good job at that: Most of the files can be easily searched for quick access. But SharePoint also has proven to be a very successful collaboration platform; its workflow capabilities, while not best of breed, are helping information and process workers get their jobs done more efficiently.
